I have an AT&T Nokia phone, and for years have been using the alarm clock function without a problem. Last year my phone wigged out for a few days. That is, the alarm clock didn't go off when I had set it but did sound at seemingly random moments. (And yes, I do know the difference between "a.m." and "p.m.," so that is not the issue.) Well, the last few days, it's at it again, although today I tested it and it seems to be working...any idea what gives?

No as long as the phone is on and it is charged enough to let the alarm go off.

Time for a new phone. The software of the phone may be out of date.
