I ask because I am currently taking a college English class and am writing an argumentation paper against making Spanish mandatory in schools. Here in MI my daughter just started Kindergarten and they have to take Spanish 1x a week. I had no say so on whether she took it or not. Also I read somewhere that in Florida they were trying to put a bill through that would make it mandatory for K-2 grade to take Spanish for 20-45 minutes a day.

Spanish is not required. They do have a subject called World Languages - the focus could be on any language though. The link below is th Michigan's Department of Education. I did not find any indication that is is required.

While I'm POSITIVE Spanish is NOT a required subject in elementary schools, it may depend on the school. There are Dual Language Schools all over the country where the entire school's program is Dual-Language therefore making Spanish a SCHOOL requirement (though, again, not a STATE requirement). How do I know? I teach at a Dual-Language school in another state. To be a student at my school means that the classes are taught in English AND in Spanish. Now, while it's not mandatory in Elementary school, taking a foreign langauge is mandatory in High School and a requirement for college. Maybe it's a good idea to get a head-start?

As far as I know... it's not mandatory to learn any language in Michigan elementary schools, at least it wasn't for my nephews or for me. Not so sure about any other states.
