I'm about to start a degree in philosophy too,and i've come across a few useful things for you.
It could be described as "the rational explanation of anything". The general principle under which all facts could be explained.Just tell them you are studying to expand your mind,to be able to think in the correct way.Philosophy in a nutshell,is the quest to explain everything in life, its mysteries and all what not.

philo- love
sophos -knowledge
roughly translated from the greek it means "love of knowledge"...that is looking as deeply as we can into absolutely everything, theres nothing philopsophy doesnt cover. There is philosophy in everything-philosophy of art, science etc then there is also ethical philosophy, logical philosophy (which covers maths), philosophy of language...seriously there is nothing that one cannot think about philosophically. Its just looking for the meanings and explainations behind everything i suppose! Hard to put in a nutshell tho as its so broad. But id see seeking of knowledge.

A philosophy is a comprehensive view of life and existence. There are many of them. Tell your folks you are interested in the many systems of belief that are instituted in the world today as well as those that were instituted in the past.

Philosophy is the attempt to form a conceptual model of reality. Quit your course and meditate. Why make do with a model of reality, when reality is awaiting your attention?

Philosophy is a very broad subject, it encompasses issues of what is the nature of reality, the nature of being.(Metaphysics) What is justified true belief, what is knowledge, its origin.(Epistemology); it deals with Moral and Ethical controversies (Ethics). Faith, in philosophy of Religion. Logical and rational thinking. (Logic) Philosophy helps one to broaden their thinking skills and to be objective and dispassionate in dealing with life's challenges. Philosophy is a very practical discipline, professional philosophers are very logical and organized thinkers. So study and learn, you won't regret it.
