What kind of job is best for an after school job. I am only 16. Some nights i have four to six hours of homework so I can't work very late ( can't function if I have less than six hours of work per night). Specifics or generalities will help.

You can tutor younger kids for a couple of hours after school, or help with their homework. You can spread the word among neighbors or your friends' younger siblings, or post an ad at the supermarket, etc. I used to tutor my younger brother and cousins in math for a few hours a week and was paid $10 per hour.

Also, I have noticed that a lot of kids have after school jobs at the local library - this is a great way to make some money and it also looks good on your college application. Some volunteer jobs (where you don't get paid) offer some sort of stipend. I worked for the YMCA for a few hours a week for a couple of months, and I earned a few hundred dollars. Colleges also love when you do volunteer work.

Look around and ask around. What jobs do your peers have that you would like? Talk to those with jobs and ask for their opinions.

Try finding a day-care open until 6:00 or 7:00--you won't be forced to stay later.

All-in-all, you're going to have to dig and find some research. Plus you can always go into a job with your boss KNOWING that you aren't going to work until 9:00 each night.

DO NOT USE INTERNET JOBS! You won't get paid at ALL! I tried and wasn't paid a dime.

Good luck, and I'm impressed by your work ethic!

Check with your school's guidance counselor. My school contacted local employers to find after school jobs for teens. I worked for two years that way in various temp and permanent positions. I made money, got school credits, and had a nice start on a resume by the time I graduated. It's worth asking!!!

Any close to home part time job is OK. The experience will serve you better than most of high school. Really is a character builder.

My first job was busing tables at a local fancy restaurant. Hard, dirty work, but nothing beats a paycheck. (I bought a disco record with my first paycheck!)

Try something that is busiest on the weekends so that you have time to study during the week. A movie theater or movie rental place perhaps.
