From a historical view:

The islamic movement threatened america's very way of life and the Americans HAD TO do something. Many disagreed at the time with the president's position but had action not been taken, the public would have been much madder.

The Americans attempted to "convert" the islamic peoples. With the massive military and economic powers of America this task was undertaken (although for any other country it would be impossible; and in hindsight it was probably doomed to be a waste of money from the start).

Ultimately, the islamic fundamentalists were just that: fundamental. The Americans were never able to convert them but the did help develop extensive infrastructure. Iraq and Afghanistan have returned to their Islamic basics, but they are for the most part less radical and continue to have close ties to America, though they are no longer thier puppets.

Terrorism continues to be a threat to the world powers of the world (sorry, USA poured too much money into meaningless tasks such as the Iraq war to keep their status and Japan makes better quality cars)

The world powers China (people), America (military) and Canada (alberta oil and fresh water) continue to be threatened by terrorism.

Air travel is now only for the rich, because extensive security measures raised the prices of tickets beyond the middle class.

No one wins. Ever. That's the true nature of war. It is self perpetuating. The Victors of WWI were the direct cause of WWII. Historians will paint the current conflict as part of the millenium long conflict between a mostly Christian West and an Islamic Near East. For Heaven's sake (intended with much irony), Israelites are still fighting Cannanites for a land that, after four thousands years can't have much milk or honey left in it.

In 100 years it will be rightly seen as a tempest in a teapot: one country overreacting and getting itself into a lot of trouble through its own incompetence. Rather like the anarchist movement in the late 19th-early 20th century (which inadvertently did help start the First World War).

I really don't think history will paint it that way. So far, it's shaping up like a "we got tricked into this quagmire" type of war like the Spanish-American War or Veitnam. We will eventually pull out with only a scap of honor and George Bush will be blamed. Neoconservatism is dead.

This conflict has been going on - with first one side ahead, then the other - for over a thousand years. It will not be settled in one century.

In 100 years, as they have the ribbon-cutting for the new "Freedom Tower" on the WTC site, no one will be able to read the ancient text stylings of the early 21st Century, and the massive central government will control every waking moment of every citizen from cradle to crematorium anyway. The chip in your cortex monitors your thoughts (if you are lucky, they won't be punishable thoughts).
Thinking about history and war will be punishable thoughts (after President Jenna Bush declares "mean thoughts" to be "tare-ist-i-somethingorother") and no one much considers questioning orders any more.
President J. Bush holds the record as the nation's only 15-term president after the suspension of the U.S. Constitution as an "outdated, and unAmerican" document. She succeeded her sister, Barbara Bush II, whose five terms set a precedent. BBII as she was known, was killed in a crash of her shuttle rocket on re-entry - an event so rare that foul play was suspected. Fortunately, Vice President Jenna Bush missed the scheduled flight because of "a thing I gotta do" and was able to assume immediate control of the Greater American government - a post she has held for 60 years now.
At this time, at the outset of the 22nd Century, around 1500 Greater Americans a day are killed in "terrorist" acts in nations they occupy around the globe. The terrorism is particularly bad in England and Germany, where Greater American PeacePatrolPeopleOnloan (3POs) have been patrolling the streets of strife-torn cities for the past 30 years after the collapse of pro-American governments prompted immediate action by the GA. France was "glassed" in 2050 after President Javiet Dumagre insulted George HW Bush's presidency in the 1990s at a Greater American State Banquet held on the ruins of the Capital Building in the Washington Free Zone. Dumagre had explained that the anti-radiation drugs had addled his wits or he never would have insulted the President's grandaddy, but Jenna was having none of it and ordered an immediate attack from the fleet of Sea Wolverine attack/ballistic/orbital subs kept on patrol along the western approaches to "Old Europe," as it used to be called. As President Jenna said, "They had it comin', the ferners."
The fundamentalist Islam movement, since you asked, remains active and relatively vital in pockets in 2106, mostly huddled outside the former world metropolises in such nations as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi, Syria, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, and in GA, the city of Chicago, however the high rad counts and accompanying sterility (left over from the brief "anti-terror" first strike ordered by then-President Barbara Bush II in 2028) have caused birth rates among the devout to plummet.
As to who will ultimately be victorious, only time will tell. As Presdient Jenna Bush, entering the last half of her 15th term, said in her blog, "The war on tare will not be won fast like, dummies. Daddy SAID it would be a long time, so WTF are you on MY case about, ANYWAY."
The dateline for the blog was Moonbase II "Greenbriar" on the Greater American side of the moon, where President Jenna has established the "Lunar White House" under Tycho.
