Parenting is the most important job anyone could undertake, but as it is now, there are no skill requirements. I believe this is why some people do such a terrible job and why we have so many f***ed-up people. Parents just don't know what they're getting into when they have children.

This is NOT about the right to have children.
It's learning something about raising them so they don't mess them up through iignorance.

I'm frustrated by the misunderstanding of this question. For example if a parent knew what a two-year-olds needs are at that stage of development, wouldn't s/he be able to respond more appropriately to problems with that child and avoid stress and possible loss of temper?

I THINK WHEN KIDS ARE ABOUT 13&14 THEY SHOULD HAVE A MANDATORY CLASS WITH SEX ED, THEN WHEN THEY ARE 16&17 REFRESH THAT COURSE AND ADD ALL ABOUT PARENTING TO IT.

Unfortunately you nor I have the right to tell someone if they can have children. I don't think a class would make things any better. People get pregnant for many different reasons. No one ever knows how hard it will be.

I should know, I am raising 2 grandchildren under the age of 3 because I can not stop one of my kids from having babies. The first one was so the father would stay with her and that didn't work so 3 months after the birth of her first child she tried the same thing with another guy. I have had the oldest since 3 months of age and the youngest since birth. And she was born 2 months early.

I don't think a mandatory class is going to make everyone a great parent. I think it is up to the parents to teach their child right from wrong. I know I am not being realistic in thinking that all parents will give that advice. I belive a class should be offered, but not mandatory. However, why don't we have teen-agers observe an actual childbirth. I tell you if anyone would have witnessed my birthing experiences they would have decided then and there not to have any kids!!!! Ha! I even had an epideral and it was still excrutiating pain. I guess giving birth to an 11 pound baby naturally has to be painful!

No. I think that everyone's course on parenting should be taught by their own parents as they are being brought up in the world. Who better to teach than the parent. Oh, I know there are "screwed-up" parents out there.

There are also screwed-up "book smart experts" who don't know a darned thing about parenting (or have kids of their own) who would be hired to teach the mandatory class with no more wisdom than the condom I got from my high school counselor.

Isn't it mandatory to take sex education in school (unless, of course, your parents get you out of it)? And yet we still can't get people to understand the importance of safe sex. So you think that having a mandatory parenting class is going to help people be parents? I don't think so.

A lot of us aren't allowed to be parents anymore. We're not allowed to discipline our kids. We're not allowed to raise our children with morals. We're not allowed to have our children take responsibility for their own actions, we're required to blame someone else for their faults. And heaven forbid if we require our children to get an education. That's why we have so many "f***ed up" people these days.

Yes -
I teach ninth grade and teach a course called SAIL - which deals with self-discipline, character, study skills and I love it, and I am so glad my district has the wisdom to have it.
The kids go basically unchecked personally if someone doesn't tell them the world isn't about them and their need of the moment.
It is an extremely important part of education - and also parenting skills with a reality check.

As a liberal, I raised my son to have an open mind and think for himself. I also stopped him from doing things his friends got to do, by the way most of their parents were not liberals. To the point, yes and people should have to take atest in order to have kids. Read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley.

No. A mandatory class would not be able to treat differently those who actually want to learn and those who are forced to take it. The voluntary class is rowdy enough, and forcing everyone to partake in it would only cheapen the learning quality.

What would really be nice is if a certification were required to reproduce. It's too bad that just anyone can do it anytime.
