Do you find that men dressing in women's clothing is sad or just gross? I'm not familiar with these cultures. I'm glad i don't feel the urge to dress in womens clothes and wear makeup.

Obviously there has been some great explantions here for the difference between tranvestites and transgendered, but the point I wanted to add is that there is nothing gross or wrong about it. And the only reason it's 'sad' is because society is so judgmental and narrowminded.

No, I do not find it sad or gross, its just who some people are. I too am glad you don't find the urge to dress up in womens clothes or wear makeup (at least you say you don't), but yet you feel the need to comment on them.
A transvestite is a wonderful person who feels comfortable in the clothes of the opposite sex. Most transvestites are happily married, yes, happily married and often their wives (or husbands) know about their desires and don't mind. Many, if not MOST transvestites are straight males who only enjoy the fetish aspect of dressing in female clothes. If they do go out, they are almost always forced to go to gay clubs for safety concerns because of ignorance on the part of society at large labeling them deviant.
Transgendered are also wonderful people who were born in the wrong sex. They were either born transgendered, hermaphroditic, or some other such reason. The only way for them to resume "normalcy" for themselves is to take back what is rightfully their's and that is control over their bodies sexual organs. So, in order to do this hormones, implants and sexual reassignment surgery is painful and necessary. However, once done, most if not almost all are set free to be themselves.

Transvestites or TV's, simply dress as the opposite sex, sometimes with special clothing to give them more of the physical apperance of the opposite sex.
Transgenders have been altered physically with some of the sexual attributes of the opposite sex and typically on hormone treatment to alter other physical characteristics.
Many theories regarding why, most prevelant is that the person though born physically as one sex are actually "programmed", their brain chemistry, as the opposite sex.
