Plant pumpkins in the spring, after the frost has passed. Choose a sunny, open site that is protected from strong wind (wind can tear leaves and make your little guy sad). Make sure your soil is rich with compost (rotted organic material), your pumpkins need a lot of nutrients in the soil!
Dig a hole about 18 inches deep and half fill it with manure (if you can get it) then put soil over the manure. Pumpkins do not need a lot of heat, so if you live in a cool place, they will still be happy.
Oh, and it is best to soak the seeds a little before planting them.
Remember, your little guy is going to spread, so give him lots of room!
Hope this helps ;-)
Oh, and believe it or not, the name comes from Greek - 'pepon' - literally it means 'cooked by the sun' or 'ripe'

You plant them in spring so that they get the sun over the summer and water in early fall and eventually grow on pumpkin patches

First of all, I'd think it best to plant the pumpkin SEED, in spring.
The word "pumpkin" was originally "pompion," from an old French word that ultimately descended from the Greek "pepon," meaning a large melon.

make confident the plant is getting adequate water, not likely the subject. now and lower back squash, or a minimum of zucchini won't produce a completely ripe fruit until eventually the season progresses, so in line with possibility the plant merely needs to mature slightly greater. good success!
