Some babies wean themselves. This is a very subjective question. Every person has their own theory. I weaned one of my children at 2, one at 12 months, and one at 3. I believe that you should nurse as long as you feel comfortable, but I had an agreement with myself that if my child ever got to the point that they caused me embarrassment in public, or I felt uncomfortable I would wean them. Something like them pulling your shirt open in public, that type of thing. I only nursed the older children when I put them down for a nap after 1 year. If you are concerned, contact the La Leche League. www.lalecheleague.org

It just depends on the mother and baby. I know women that wean their babies from nursing very early on, 6 weeks or so. If you are wanting the baby to wean on his/her own then it could be a little longer, ok, a lot longer. My first child (I weaned at 12 months and I had a hard time doing it.) My second I weaned at 17 months and it wasn't as hard b/c he was older and understood, but I had to wean b/c I was pregnant with my next. I am currently nusing the 3rd child. He is 1 and I had thought we were going to wean around his first birthday b/c he was really acting like it, but then he started cutting those darn teeth and now there are no signs of weaning in our future anytime soon. I'm ok with nursing, as long as my baby is happy and healthy. It is up to you how long you let your child nurse. Some babies won't wean on their own (without help) until they are close to 2 years. But, you can wean them sooner if you want.

Best wishes!

It really depends on when you want to wean your baby, I know Woman who have nursed up to 2 years, where others sometimes wean sooner, maybe less then a year.

As some said sometimes a baby will wean its self

I saw show once where this lady would let her children breast feed as long as they wanted to, the girls was 6 at the time and still having some milk from mom once or twice a day. She said that her oldest son who was 10 stopped when he was about 8

All babies should wean themselves off the breast if left to their own devices. Some do it at 6 months, others carry on for alot longer.I actually weaned my eldest onto a cup at 12 months as she had to go into hospital and I couldn't be with her all the time.My middle daughter was breastfed for over 3 years, I was actually pregnant with my third daughter when she stopped. My youngest was also breastfed for 3 years, she too gradually weaned herself.

Some babies won't on their own. Some kids will still breastfeed at 2 if the mom lets them. There is no evidence that breastfeeding after age 1 has any benefits.

If you want to breastfeed your child as long as you can, I would say once they get that first tooth you should stop. It will be very uncomfortable for you. But if your baby gets that first tooth and its fine, nurse your baby as long as you feel comfy with it. But the normal would be until the baby is 1 year old, because at that time you can start your baby on regular milk.

well thats personal choice i havn`t fed any of my 6 after 11 months, i really don`t think they need to bf after this time,, it depends from baby to baby ,some mums bf when they are much older i really think its so not right when they are no longer babies,, but you can give up when you are happy, some babies are only bf for a few days ,some not at all,
