for a team in first place, this is also known as the "magic number". if for example the elimination number of the team in 2nd place is 5, any combination of the first place teams wins and the 2nd place teams losses will eliminate the 2nd place team.

for the teams trying to stave off elimination, this is sometimes referred to as the "tragic number".

The number of games that your team loses or the competition wins before they are eliminated from playoff contention. For example if the number is 4 - that would mean any combination of 4 of your teams losses or the other teams wins.
