I've lived in San Diego for 24 years and every now and then I think that maybe it's time for a change. Then I take a drive to LA, and know why it is I haven't moved. Anything north of Laguna is just plain ugly. Whenever I talk to anyone from LA they all say how much they like SD. The college crowd lives around Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach as well. It's a little too scuzzy for me right near the beach, but there are some nice blocks a little further in. El Cajon, is hot...you may as well not move from Texas if you move there. Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and O'Side are way too out of the way, unless you get a job up there (and I see a lot of jobs up there these days). Claremont is an older neighborhood, centrally located in the city...but like I said, it's older. Anywhere west of the I-5 is going to be a little more expensieve because it is near the coast and anything east of the 15 is going to be less expensive because it is hot like heck in the summer. If you want to live in a quiet beach town, try looking between north of Del Mar and south of Carlsbad. If you want to find something a little more urban, there are a lot of new condos downtown these days. Just know that the traffic is horrible here, but it's still better than LA. And it's also cheaper to live here than LA or San Fran.

I grew up in Pine Valley, CA which is in the hills about 45 minutes east of San Diego. After graduating high school, I moved into El Cajon. I'm now in Wyoming and loving the much lower cost of living with the much higher per capita wages!
On an average, you'll need to make a minimum of $22/hour to live in the San Diego region... and that's just to rent an apartment. There's a ton of other places you can choose but it all boils down to where the work is.
Good luck!

North San Diego county is a booming area that still has affordable housing. Check out Vista, San Marcos, Oceanside, Carlsbad (pricier than most), and Escondido (more inland and can be warm!). All of these areas are convenient with freeway access for easy San Diego commuting (about 40 to 50 minutes from downtown depending on the traffic). Talk to realtors in the areas and they can point out the advantages and disadvantages of specific areas.

San Diego has the best weather in the country. Like everywhere in California, it is fairly expensive but a college degree will get you a good job. There are tons of things to do!

well i lived in la mirada, los angeles for 7 years and nothing bad ever happened. La Mirada is a quiet and a developing city. It even has a university called biola.. The only bad side of moving to cali is that the houses are expansive.. 500g average i think..

El Cajon, CA is a cheap but nice area to live (except for downtown). It's about 30 min. from San Diego.
