Be careful when trying to clean the toilet tank. I don't know what works, but I know what doesn't. Bleach left soaking in the tank can ruin seals that break down causing leaks and black marks in your bowl. We thought we had mold in the tank and it was just the black rubber seals breaking down and getting all over everything after one of our people put bleach in the tank.

They have products on the market that clean your tank, but you should do a thorough cleaning prior to using them - use softscrub and a toilet brush or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

since i have REALLY bad, rusty, sulfur water my tank gets a lot of black slimy stuff in it. i do one of two things to clean it,
sometimes i flush and when the water is still low i pour about three cups of bleach in it and let it sit for a little while then flush again.
or, i flush and while the water is low i pour toilet bowl cleaner in there and scrub with a brush and then flush.
either way you have to flush a lot to get the junk out of the tank.
good luck.

You DON'T need to clean the tank as it holds only fresh water. You really should not try to clean the tank. Leave any mineral build up alone unless it is impreding the flusing mechanism.

Try cleaning it with muriatic acid. You get this at your hardware store. it's not that expensive and works great! I use it.
