My mechanic says my 1993 Mazda B2600i has no spark, maybe he should change the distributor. This is after I just paid him over $400 to change the fuel pump in the fuel tank and the truck still won't start.
Any ideas?
This truck is too old for me to keep dumping money into it for "maybe" fixes.

omg this is funny we have the same excact truck at work on rack right now, same year and all they tried a known good dist, it wasnt that. we just hung a main relay on it and its good to go, but check your dist just incase and also the pcm its behind the kick panel on pass front. if you try tapping on it with a small hammer while cranking and it fires up you have a bad pcm long story short sell it the pcm cost over 1200 dollars.

Find another mechanic, one who knows how to diagnose, not someone who just stands back and throws parts at the problem.
This is a very expensive and inefficient, not to mention unsatisfying manner of repair.
As I remember, (been a long time) I think that all of the ignition control except the ignition coil for this Mazda are in the distributor, and if there is no spark, but there IS power to the trigger and ignition, this might be a reasonable direction to go.
But is there power to it?
Any chance the ignition switch is failing to give it power in the crank position?
If there is power to it, has he checked the ignition coil? Is the resistance within spec?
Does the little truck have an ignition resistor?
Insist he do some REAL diagnostics, or at least guarantee that THIS will repair your pick-up.

It is this sort of guessing that paints all real mechanics with the brush of tar, and why so many states have created regulatory agencies to protect the general population from these geniuses.

Good Luck

I would have thought it was impossible for a bearing to escape from the crankshaft and block. Unless the bearing cap was also there?? The shells are captive... Changing bearing shells is not impossible without removing the crank, but it is not good practice. Do you have any reason to suspect the bearing came out of the motor, is there any noise? How's oil pressure? Maybe someone did a "quick" bearing change, but dropped a shell into the pan. It might also explain a leaking gasket as well.
