As an instructor of both Belly Dance & Polynesian dance, I can tell you that both styles are very different, but have many of the movements have similarities. Both dance styles have sharp percussive movements, and smooth round movements. In deciding which style to pursue, the biggest factor to consider is "how available is quality instruction in your area". Depending on where you are, you are more likely to find a belly dance teacher than a Hula teacher. Another consideration is the culture that surrounds the dance style. Although belly dance is primarily Middle Eastern, it has grown into a world dance with many, many different styles and perfomed with lots of different types of costuming and music. Polynesian dance keeps a closer link to its original culture. Check out Wickipedia, and websites on the dance styles. You can usually find a beginner level belly dance class for a reasonable price at your local YWCA, Community Center, etc. Give it a try!

Hula dancing is Polynesian and belly dancing is from the Middle East. Both have hip swaying and shimmying as an important element, but otherwise they have lots of differences. Which one you like more is entirely down to personal preference. Also remember that part of the enjoyment of any dance class comes from your relationship with the teacher. See if any of the dance studios near you, will let you try one class to see what it's like. Then see which one you enjoy more.

The hip movements in both styles are excellent exercise for women because they promote strength in the whole pelvic area, both internally and externally.

Hula dancing is Hawaiian/Polynesian, belly dancing is Middle-Eastern. They are quite different, while there are some similarities, and both great. Look them up on wikipedia.org - it is a great resource. Then try both and decide. Good luck.

That's like asking, "What's the difference between tap dancing and ballet?" They're two different forms of dance that developed in two distinct parts of the world.

No one can tell you which you'd like better. The only way you can answer that question is to try both of them and draw your own conclusion.

Have fun!
