A lot of second hand stores have fish tanks in them, or you can use a large Rubbermaid container. Just remember to let the water stand for 24 hours before using it so the chlorine can evaporate and change 10% of the water every day to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels associated with new tanks from becoming toxic.

Goldfish do not need a tank to survive. You can buy a rather inexpensive fish bowl at any pet store. To keep your fish alive in a bowl though you will need to change the water at least once a week and clean the bowl thoroughly.

Gold fish will live in any kind of container they are very hardy. I have mine in an aquarium with some platties, but if they get ick I take my goldfish and put them in a five gallon bucket until it's clear. They do fine in the bucket for days.

Ask on Freecycle for a fish tank. There is a freecycle for just about every county in the US, as well as many individual cities. http://www.freecyclefinder.org/finder/FindGroupsStart.php
You can search through recent posts to see if anyone offered one, or you can ask for one specifically.

they can live quite well in a gallon sized jar as longas you change the water every few days. when I was a kid, we used to have about a dozen goldfish lined up on the wndowsills in large pickle and peanut butter jars.
