This may not be the best advice...but when I was using a stupid phrase as a teen my mom started using it....over and over....
It really bothered me to the point that every time I heard it I covered my ears.
If you want to make something undesirable...then have an adult who isn't cool use it.

It depends on how old your grandson is... smacking an 18-year-old will likely make him laugh.
Different generations have different ways of expressing themselves, so it's normal he uses phrases you don't. However, if you make it clear that you don't like them, he should think of your feelings and avoid them.
(I'm assuming the word gay didn't appear in the sentence "Grandma, I think I'm gay.")
But perhaps you could explain to him what exactly it is about these words you don't like. With "gay" maybe you don't like him referring to sexuality or sex-related issues, at least not in a family context. (I don't know, I'm just guessing).
With "whatever" perhaps you don't like the mental laziness it implies - it's a noise to make that fits "whatever" question you are asked. As such it can almost become a way of indicating: "I realise you said something but I can't be bothered to process it and reply". Try and put the ball back in his court, by putting the onus back on him to respond.
But it's difficult to answer without knowing more about the context.
Have to add this - I'm fascinated that a grandparent bothered by these expressions is techie enough to be using Yahoo answers! Yet another of my prejudices overturned....

don't worry about it, in a few weeks he will move on
at the moment my daughters on with "what ever minger"
and my 2 step sons have been calling each other gay for the past year even though on many occasions i sit them both down together and ask if either have a liking for boys, when they both say no i then tell them that they can not call each other gay as they are not ( they are 12 & 14 and understand gay, not as easy if your grandson is younger).

How successful were your Granparents in stopping you using phrases like "dig this man" and "groovy"? The sayings of your Grandchildren are the current day "in" words. All of thier peers will be using them too so you are fighting a losing battle to change them. Trying to stop them will probably make them do it more. They will move on to other things in thier own time.Just love them for the individuals they are

U are fighting a losing battle there, the words whatever and gay are part of language nowadays...hey they all do it...first time my daughter called me gay..I was nonplussed now I realise she isn't referring to my sexuality so I kinda get it now!! And besides, there are far worse words thtat your grandson could be using aren't there??

Sit down with him and ask why he uses those terms. It could be that he doesn't understand why they're offensive. And then explain why they're offensive, and ask him not to use them. Repeat as necessary. Eventually, you'll get through to him.
YOU have a power that your grandson's parents don't have - kids are actually more likely to listen to grandparents than to parents.
Good luck!

Think of an expression using the word 'whatever' that will really annoy your grandson. eg "Whatever is the matter with you, cherub?". Make this your reply whenever he says 'whatever'.
caveat emptor

If he is being derogatory to you...then he needs to be respectful of his Grandma. Remind him who you are in his life and you would appreciate his respect. He can speak like that with his friends but youre not a friend youre family. Both are very common slang terms and are relatively meaningless.
