I want to start using a cut throat razor, but if I can't keep it sharp... let's just say I like my head on my shoulders.

i use a straight razor. but i sharpen it now and then with a regular strop. I only use the strop maybe every 3 months or so and it makes my razor just like new. I have saved a fortune over the last 2 years cause i dont have to buy razor blades anymore (i invested £130+ in my straight razor though)

To answer your question, i have read someplace that there is a wooden alternative to the leather strop. I dont know how effective that would be over time though. Try asking at a barbers?

You could use the disposable straight razor blades - but that would defeat the whole point of a traditional shave.

Dear Tom C
I admire your adherence to your principles. If It is beginning to look like there is no really good alternative, perhaps you could recycle a strop? :take one the barber has finished with,or make your own from an old belt. That way no new( cow?) has to die and you are not increasing the supply & demand by buying from a shop .
Or visit your local barber for your shave .
All the nice girls/guys like a clean shaven face( and some of the nasty ones too!)
Wishing you a smooth life
