Absolutely, there's no reason to think you shouldn't. You should make sure that the shop is reputable, licensed, clean and sterilizes its needles- important qualifications anytime you get a tattoo! But the tattoo will have no effect on your milk or your baby at all.

Not that I think this is your plan, but as a side note, I wouldn't get a tattoo on your breast at this point- breasts change a great deal over the course of nursing (and more if you have more kids) and I've heard some tattooed mamas say that it can mess up the tat.

And condolences on the loss of your father; this sounds like a beautiful way to remember him.

Being a fan of tattoos and piercings as well as a health care professional I can tell you that you'll be fine. The only thing you need to worry about is what kind of place you're going to. You need to make sure it's clean and they keep up with their sterilization. Ask about their sterilization techniques, ask about previous clients and their experiences, ask around town to see if you know anyone who has been tattooed there before. Most states require a tattoo shop to be licensed and registered with the local health department and health inspector. Call the local health inspector and ask what their rating was, did they pass their last inspection? If you're in Oregon (we have the most strict tattoo laws in the nation) as long as you go into a reputable shop that still has their business license, you don't have to go to such extremes. The health inspector will shut them down for even the smallest violation.

That sounds like a lot of work, but its really not when compared with the risk of getting Hep C or HIV. You should be able to check out your state's laws on tattoo shops, that will help you be better informed when you go and ask the questions to the shop proprietor. Good luck honey and my condolences about your dad.

I would wait until you are done breastfeeding. You never know if the place you get the tattoo is clean/sterile and you could end up getting an infection and passing it to your baby. Also if you were to get an infection and had to be on antibiotics, with some of them you can't breastfeed. It is not worth the risk.

Wait until your baby stops breastfeeding. If you can't give blood for a year after getting a tattoo, then I would think that breastfeeding is out of the question.

Just keep in mind that you run the risk of getting hepatitis or HIV because the needles may not be properly sterilized. So for the sake of hepatitis, it's not a good idea. You can't pass HIV to your baby through breast milk - unless you have a cut in your nipple and baby has a sore in his mouth.
Otherwise, there's no risk to the quality of the milk.
So if you need to get the tattoo. Make VERY sure they used sterilized needles.

I got one while breastfeeding. Just make sure you don't go into some hole to get the tat done. Make sure it's a reputable place. I think it's great you are honoring your father

Ask your health visitor or doctor about having a tatoo while you are breastfeeding.

Nice gesture but that is such an unnecessary risk to you and your baby at this important time of your lives. Wait until you are done breast feeding.

Not criticizing tattoos at all I have 3......all way before baby came!!

Im sure you wouldnt go to a disreputable place anyway, so you'll be fine.
Tattoo ink goes into your skin, not any further. It will not in anyway have anything to do with breastmilk.
