I'm going to second Katherine the Great's laughter and comments. Heck, as a college instructor I tend to find that many of my students have difficulty naming any author of any gender. (They can name titles, sometimes, but seldom authors. And they can't be counted on to remember the titles of books they've read. Usually, if they want to talk about a book, they say something like, "There's this book where this guy ...".)

If my students knew that Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, I'd have a small celebration.

Actually, anyone with half a brain won't just name those three, but also authors like JK Rowling, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Dickinson, Emily Bronte, Mary Pope Osborne, several acomplished songwriters (who are technichally authors)Lucy Maud Montgomery, etc. Mary Shelley isn't actually that well known, it's Frankenstien who is.
Here's a challenge for you: name a couple of male authors other than Mark Twain and Miguel Cervantes. I mean, really famous ones.

Read Body Parts, by Annie Cheney. Speaking of Frankenstein.
Its a book about a little known business. The selling of body parts. How Body brokers buy and sometimes steal body parts of people after they die.
Very interesting.
Mary Shelley would be proud!

The trick is not knowing OF women authors, the real trick is knowing which authors ARE women, such as P. D. James and Harper Lee and George Eliot. Not everyone realizes that those might be male sounding, but they are female authors

With just a quick run through of Gonzo Rat's answers, I can think of dozens she/he left out. Would you like a list of those as well?
Go to any of the bestseller lists and you'll discover how many readers know female authors.

Try Ayn Rand. She wrote, "The Fountainhead," and "Atlas Shrugged." FANTASTIC writer and FANTASTIC BOOKS.

Anne Rice, "Interview with the Vampire," "Lestat, the Vampire," "Queen of the Damned," “The Body Thief,” “Menoch, the Devil,” “The Vampire, Armand,” “Merrick,” “Blood and Gold,” “Blackwood Farm,” “Blood Canticle,” “Pandora,” “Vittorio," “The Mummy, or Ramses, the Damned.”

And a host of others... she's a most prolific writer. She's now turning her efforts to writing novels with Christian thought.
