There are two types of plungers: the rust colored cup shaped one, that are used for sink drains, and the black ones with the smaller hole on the bottom (used for toilets). If all you have is the red kind, you can still try to plunge with it, but it won't be as effective. Make sure you have enough water in the bowl to cover it. Try to get a good seal around the hole and plunge up and down.

Follow the directions on the box!!!!(lol) If that fails, grab the damn thing by the handle, put the working end (rubber) over the drain. Then push it up and down. Sort of like masturbation. You should enjoy it. If that doesn't work,,,,call a plumber!!!!
