I haven't heard plectrum since I was a little 'fella! It all depends on the sound your looking for,I play and teach bass and use both methods to get the sound I want. I take it your playing a six string so if your after a crisp jazzy sound use a stiff pick and strum. If your more of the rocker type crank up your gain and use a pick for both notation and strumming. Either way PRACTICE!

Depends on the tune and style you prefer.
House of the rising sun to quote a beginners tune, sounds good with a plectrum if you want to put guts and definition into it but if you want class style and musical skill finger pick it.
Barre chords again your choice but its the same old story.
If you're not too good belt it with a plectrum. You can get away with murder on electric.

If you play fingerstyle then just carry on doing that. You will have to adjust your volume up a bit, but you have loads of control using fingers as opposed to picks, and it will give you an edge to your playing, Provided your sound setup is right, barre chords will sound fine too. You will need slightly heavier strings to give a meatier sound. The best guitarist I ever played with only ever used his fingers. Hope this helps!

i think your band is right, and it may be more comfortable (ive heard that you can hurt your fingers/finger nails) with and electric to use a pick. i use a pick but i guess thats just personal preference. i do feel like i get a better sound when i use one, but my bff hates picks. and some people say it doesnt make a diffenence sound wise. so do what you feel comfortable. oh, and good luck with the band! maybe you'll get a gig soon!

If you can already use your fingers, why not use a combination of the two -- pick held between right hand index and thumb, leaving middle and ring finger free to chord up, or play arpeggio's -- It never did Albert Lee any harm.

If you bite your nails off or have them very short then using a plectrum would help you out and will give a different sound.

The pick would be a good way to go when your playing fast you aint got time to pick the seperate strings with your fingers. Get one and try it out fo a while. Usually if you go to the same place to get strings or whatever the'll be like here. Not even charge ya.
You might want to start with like a medium weight pick and see how you like it.

Yeah, if you want to play rock guitar on an electric, you'll need to learn to use a pick.
