Try to get in touch with two, perhaps three local community resources:
1) Legal Aid
2) A social worker case manager...for you or even for your son. They might be able to advocate for you on behalf of your son. Even if just to get a court order that the grandparents may not speak disparengingly about you.
3) Your or his local health care "chemical dependancey" case manager. To get him into a good program and to advise how the two of you can have your own relationship without the grandparents interference.

Family "tri-angles" are common and usually involve dumping all the family anger on the weakest individual or they have the most emotional distance from. Try to step out of all of the tri-angles in your life and insist on having relationships directly with each person "one on one" with nobody else involved. This means declining to participate in ANY gossip about another family member or friend. A good book that has a very helpful chapter about getting out of messy tri-angles is "The Dance of Anger".

This way you can have your own private relationship with your child...with nobody else in the middle. Sure, they may badmouth you...but ask your son to try to get to know you without them in the middle and to reserve judgement and to judge for himself without regard to their comments or unfair criticisms. Good luck.

For 1, Don't take this out on your son. Because that is exactly what you are doing. How do you know you won't be able to make a difference for him after. why not take him back. Think maybe the lies he has been told, you can fix it. Please what ever you do do not give up your parental rights. I may not have the experience, but you will for sure regret that in the future and you may not be able to turn it around. Now, why in the world would you want to leave him in that state in a home like that. Why would you not want to take him away from it. I think you need to see someone who knows about this stuff and see if they can guide you in the right direction before you make any irrational moves you will regret.
There has to be a social worker or someone in a Children's Aid department that has known or had to deal with an experience about this before. Please look for advise first. And if you feel that the father might be the best way to go, you CAN give the proper information to the lawyers. There has to be a way out there to fix this other than giving up your rights. Just look further into it. Good Luck.
