I had a friend who had this done she was a high risk pregnacy and they did it so the cervix wouldn't dilate before it was time she was also put on bed rest the remainder of her pregnacy.

They do it later in the pregnancy when someone has an "incompetent cervix", which means that it may not be able to support the weight of the growing baby with "giving way" and resulting in the baby's being delivered far too early. They stitch the cervix closed to keep it from opening and to keep the baby from being delivered because of the problem with the cervix.
Once the fetus is old enough so that being born wouldn't be a disaster for it they can remove the stitch.
There's nothing wrong with the pregnancy or the baby. Its just kind of a "mechanical problem".
I believe it may be associated with more than one elective abortion, but I'm not sure. It probably has other causes as well.

My Aunt's sister lost 4 babies due to Incompetent Cervix and her doctor finally did her's and she had 2 healthy, close to full-term pregnancies after that. I lost a baby girl last month (Aug 11th) at 21 weeks due to this also and I was told that I would have to go in ayt 14-15 weeks next time for the stitching, but they said that now they don't do bed rest unless something else is going on.

That happens because someone has an incompent cervix. I have one and it was discovered too late to get stiched. I am currently 33 weeks and everything has worked out. I was 5 months when they discovered it, which is too late to be stiched. Let the person know that she has to take it easy and more
than likely will be put on bedrest
