Knowing the actual code and engine size will be helpful.
Update: Are you using an aftermarket scan tool? There is a code present, it stores one every time the light comes on. Perhaps a factory scan tool such as the WDS or IDS would prove to be more efficient at pulling the code. It could be DPFE, I have seen a lot of these go bad, or clogged EGR ports, or vacuum leak, etc. A trip to the dealer for a diagnostic check could have saved you a lot of time and money.

~~~oh my gosh,,,I have a 2001 Mustang and it does the same thing,,,,,its been on since the day I bought it,,,,,have had it checked,,,,everyone said hmmm no worries,,,,,so I dont worrie,,,,you are right though,,,its annoying,,,,,grrr to that little lite,,,,~~~
