It's fairly easy. It's ideal for recording from a microphone or something else plugged into the line in port of your compy (record player etc).
If you're looking to record something already playing on your compy (such as on the Internet) then a different prog may be in order.

Audacity will import all kinds of audio files.

To record to Audacity connect a microphone (I've also used an electric guitar) into your microphone port and record direct.

You can multitrack in both stereo and mono and mix audio types (MP3's , WAV's and fresh recordings)

I teach this to college kids of 14 so I know it is a really easy to use and powerful peice of software.

Audacity is for playing music into a computer from the audio jacks of a stereo, to do that you need the Griffin iMic.
