I don't mean those so called artists who seem to claim fame from covering over peoples songs
I am wanting original artists who write and preform all there own stuff and they can be dead or alive, still preforming or retired

Some of the answers are misleading in that they are about singers........not singer/song writers. Meatloaf, for example, did not write his own songs. Me, being a wrinkly, would say Neil Diamond.......many songs he's written and perfomed have been covered by others.

The answer to this is sooo easy It has to be Bob Dylan, He has written so many songs for other artists too. He is revered by all the bands and singers, He has to be the best even if he isn't your personal choice, Ask all the Artistes and they will all say Bob Dylan....

In defence of Mariah Carey, she has had a part in writing almost all of her songs, and performs them (or performed them) to a standard that a lot of vocalists would agree as very high, despite any vocal abuse caused from some vocalising (e.g. excessive whistle register use).

PRINCE! He can sing in 5 different octaves from low to high and he writes beautiful love songs (Adore, The Beautiful Ones, Scandalous,to name a few) and is there a more lovely song than Purple Rain? Not to many! Prince gets my vote!

Jackson Browne. Amazing lyrics and a very distinctive voice for example from Running On Empty. "Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels. Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields."

sorry aint nothing wrong w covers. Kelly Clarkson! Skye sweetnam, Aly and Aj. I dunno about songwriters, those who wrote nsync, they did some, etc. Diane Warren, they are there because they are good. U aint gonna get a top 10 w out them. Don't even try, although they had real good songs but no all time songs that make it like the beetles.
