People like Hunter S. Thompson books becuase he wrote journalism in a way never seen before. His work was unadultaerated, in your face, honest journalism. While many journalist were shying away from anything controversial, Hunter was in the mix being part of the controversy, and living a life not knwn to others. While paople may not like his writing, he should get his due respect for Gonzo Journalism and respect forbeing a voice for an alternative crowd. Who else could tell you about the hell's angels from an inside perspective, not only as an observer but as a participant.

Hunter is critically acclaimed for a good reason. He lived an honest life and did not allow anyone else to influence his true self. That was reflected in his writing. I don't think his books suck. But I bet you really liked the Da Vinci Code and a lot of other stuff that was absolutely panned by literary critics.

i'm not a druggee and i admire what he did to journalism and his frenetic style of writing. your posit stems from personal opinion which has no actual effect on the status of the writing itself.
i don't like john steinbeck's writing; to me, his books "suck." i am more than aware that his books overall do not, in fact, suck.

Each person brings their own background and experience to something they read. Consequently a book means different things to different readers.

Cause as a general rule people are stupid. You tell enough people with big enough mouths that something is awesome, the idea spreads.

I sure don't know! But I agree with you. Same way with John Steinbeck.

yea, what the first guy said.
he's actually really funny... "fear & loathing" is just so outrageous that it's really amusing. his other stuff gets way political, so i can't digest that, but he's definitely covered new ground.

Pure and simple. He was a drug junkie, particularly LSD. Therefore he has a "druggie" cult following. I can't stand reading that crapola.
