The dominant theory of the creation of everything in the universe is the Big Bang. At first there was a big mass of matter and energy that somehow exploded and got scattered all over the universe. The small fragments of that explotion became what we all know as the galaxies, space dust and gases, stars, planets, etc. All this matter is in constant movement because there's nothing that can actually stop them since there's no friction in outer space. The Milky Way, our Solar System and the Planets are also moving constantly. It's the gravity of all these planets, stars, satellites, etc. what keep everything together though. That's why the planets go around the sun but never escape or 'fly away' from it. Also the earth has been rotating constantly as an effect of that big explosion. Since there's no resistance that could stop it, the earth rotates constantly. Some scientists have found out that earth's rotation is being slowed down very slowly by the presence of moon's gravity. However, hundreds of thousands of years will have to pass in order to have our days reduced by some seconds.
God did a great job with the creation of the world.

Gravity? Maybe that's what keeps us close to the sun, but I dont' see how that makes the planet spin.
When the solar system was created the planet was formed spinning. Since space offers no friction the Earth has continued to revolve; both on it's axis and around the sun.
