I am Hindu and I know a little bit that might help...ok...not all Indian guys where this sacred thread...only Pundits or Pundits in training...Pundits are what Christians call Priests and Jewish ppl call Rabbis and so on...the thread is called a Janeu which is given to a Pundit after they have been christened by their Guru...when they receive that thread they take an secret oath and must refrain from certain things like alcohol and meats, eggs, etc.

The Janeu can also be worn on their wrist by other Hindus who are not Pundits. Only after they do Puja which is the act of showing reverence to a god, a spirit, or another aspect of the divine through invocations, prayers, songs, and rituals. Also marriage b/c that involves doing Puja.

HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL!!

Not all Indians but Males of cast Brahmin & some males of cast Kshatriya (Kings) have a right to wear a string across their chest after performing a ceremony called as Maunjibandhan / Munj. Maunjibandhan is a special ceremony & at ancient times it was considered that after doing this ritual the person is having some special rights to perform religious rituals. In this ceremony the string is weared by the ceremony performing person. The string was the proof & symbol of the religious rights of person. It is called as Yadnyopavit /Janave/ Janeu . The ceremony was mainly done after completing age of 8 years, but now a days age limit for it is looking increased upto 15 -16 years. Now in state Maharashtra not only brahmin males but females & people of other casts also started to perform this ceremony but their percentage is very less.
