Today, you all agree on the fact that love stories have little or no place in the society in as much s writing is concerned. It is now meant for the movie industries. A good short story should first of all be a reflection of your society and through that vision of the society, you can easily dive yourself into the imaginary world which still reveals the identity of man in the society. To cut it short, to draw the attention of readers, you should be able to expose the ills of the society and equally create events which can easily be carried out.
Love stories have lost their value in the writing field.

Start a story out with the following line:

"If you are reading this, then I am almost certainly dead."

Ask yourself what kind of person would write this, and what would the situation be? You could turn this into a letter to someone in particular, or perhaps a murder victim's dying words. Maybe this person was in a good deal of trouble.

The goal, really, is to come up with an interesting situation that contains characters we want to know about. The sentence above is just one way to do that. Just be careful (if you use the line above) not to turn it into an exposition without any dialogue or action.

In any fiction story, you essentially have a protagonist who faces a drama and the story is in the resolution of the drama. But basically I agree with the others - I work hard to come up with ideas and I am not giving them away for free!

What about someone who goes through life never coming up with original concepts, but has to go to amazing lengths to steal them from others? Then he gets caught, and it's hell to pay - his girlfriend leaves him for being a fake, etc.

Stephen King said he likes to combine two ideas in an unusual way. I like that approach a lot.

...For example, a psychological take on a fervently religious yet highly suicidal nun. I don't know.

I like to base characters on people I know, or to combine attributes of several people I know. There's an old lady with tons of makeup and jewelry at my church. She sings with a squeaky high soprano... She could be a great character.

Look around for ideas in your own life.
