After ejaculation, the fluid that carries sperm liquefies and most of it runs out. Your body can’t use and doesn’t need that fluid, so it’s has to run out at some point. You may be worried that you’re losing valuable sperm, but according to Dr. Michael Bohrer, MD, endocrinologist with Reproductive Medical Associates of New Jersey and former director of the IVF program at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, “The vagina naturally slopes backwards and the majority of ejaculate will be retained.”

Sperm are speedy and can make their way to the Fallopian tubes within five to 10 minutes of ejaculation. Many experts recommend lying on your back with a pillow under your hips for about 15 to 20 minutes after intercourse. The consensus is that it can’t hurt and may help. But forget standing on your head—that won’t do anything other than make you dizzy.

Sperm can live within the vaginal cavity for three days. However those little suckers a very fast swimmers. So once the sperm is released into your body then you only need to remain lying down for 15 minutes. After that time period any sperm that remains in the fluid that seeps out do not have enough stamina to reach the egg anyway.

I heard somewhere it takes approx 70 minutes for the sperm to reach the egg (obviously however depending on where the egg is loctaed at that point in time) it can also take up to 20 mintues for the sperm to actually burrow through the outer layer of the egg to fertilise it.

It can take from 30 minutes to 24 hours to get from the vagina to the egg. And sperm don't die after 24 hours they can live from 3-7 days in the right conditions.

Sperm can actually survive up to three days. This means they have anywhere from the minute they are released to about three days later. I think that the winner probably reaches the egg within about one day.

Sperm can live in you for up to 72 hours. There is really no set time. I would imagine it could be as quick as a few minutes! :-)

Hardly a scientific answer, but I do believe it is in direct inverse proportion to how badly you want a child. If you want kids really bad, it takes forever and those people who don't want kids get pregnant in a second.
