I have bought mostly Dells and Gateway desktops. They aren't very good in terms of individual components and performance, but they're cheap. Recently Dell has tried to offer a high performance line (XPS) to compete with the high end vendors like Falcon NW and Alienware, but at the end of the day, your local clone vendor probably offers a better deal on a high end desktop, providing of course you know what you're talking about, and can specify and verify the individual components they use. For the same reasons, a lot of people choose to build a clone themselves because they can pick the individual parts from the mobo on up.
As for laptops, the rules are very different. Laptops vary greatly as to the design goal (weight and portability vs. power). Recently HP laptops have jumped to the head of the pack for price/performance in the commodity laptop market, in my opinion. The tradiitional players (Dell, Toshiba and IBM) all continue to offer a lot of great options there.
Of course, those who swear by Apple will never buy anything else, and you can't argue too much with the quality as well as the OS usability. My complaint with Apple has always been price/performance ratio. If however, you're a graphic artist, or video editor, Apple has long held an advantage in terms of the tools.
As a final answer to your question, as of this second, I'm using a Gateway Desktop machine, however, I've upgraded the video card. I'm shopping for a new more powerful desktop so that I can play some games in my spare time, and I've concluded that I'll buy the components and put this one together in all probability. Once I priced what I wanted from Dell, Alienware, Falcon and a few other high end clone vendors, I concluded that there's no price advantage. This should tell you a lot about the junk that goes into the low cost Dell and Gateway machines.

I am very happy with my Notebook computer!!!
! am using an HP Pavilion zd8000 it is a terrific multimedia notebook that's packed with new technologies like Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2005, PCI Express graphics, and an ExpressCard slot.
The zd8000 scored the highest multimedia ratings that have been seen on any notebook. It also has a gorgeous BrightView 17-inch widescreen display and an external HP USB Dual TV tuner, which lets you watch one show while recording another. Its Harman Kardon speakers had impressive sound.
The zd8000 comes with the new ExpressCard/54 PC Card slot—which offers high-speed transfers of 250 Mbps each way—and PCI Express graphics from the 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X600 card. But its gaming test scores were average, because of its basic X600 GPU.
HP should be applauded for including new technologies in the zd8000 and for producing a top-rated system that is sure to please many multimedia enthusiasts.

HP
I replaced a Dell that had a failure.
I once had a job fixing Gateways that were still under warranty. I would never spend a penny on a piece of junk like that brand.

Macintosh. I wouldn't spend money on anything else. Everything is easier, they're much more secure and expandable, and they can run more software than PCs. PCs can only run Linux or Windows. Macs can run Mac OS X, the best desktop OS, Linux, the best server OS, or Windows, the world's virus platform.

My custom gaming rig (AMD 64 Athlon 3700+, 2 Gigs/ram, Radeon Saphire X850XT PCI-E, 600w PS) It's just got a plain black case, but I never look at the case anyway, it just sits down below me. No reason to waste $$ on a cool case.
And yes, I love it. :)
