his alibi was supposed to be that he was sleeping with somebodyelse's wife. remember this happened in the 19th cenutry wherein divorce is not legal and adulterers are treated harshly by the society.

did he make a morally correct choice? whY?

Yes, he made the correct moral choice. It is always morally superior to suffer yourself than to let another be punished.

I believe I heard this story in the form of a bluegrass song.

whether divorce is legal or not... adultery first of all isn't a moral choice. So, his first choice was not morally correct.

His 2nd choice, to not give his alibi... was the cowards way out. He didn't want society to see what he had done... back then, it would probably have been worse than death... and therefore he was a coward and to me that isn't moral.

If you are going to do things... at least have the courage to stand up for your actions. Otherwise... who are you kidding but yourself?

Sounds like he was protecting someone he truly loved... How romantic!! People of America are convicted and sent to death for crimes they did not commit to this very day..

It sounds as if he was condemmed unrightfully, but most likely was either trying to protect his wife, or the women he was with
