you have the chemical in it's proper container (beaker for example) and you swift your hand over the opening to allow for the vapors to come towards your nose...DO NOT PUT YOUR NOSE TO THE CHEMICAL AND INHALE....that is not the proper proceedure. just wave your hand over the top in a "come here" like motion and you should be able to catch a few of the vapors....

b careful

Hold it several inches from your nose and waft the fumes toward your face with your hand.
If you stick your nose close to it and it's a nasty chemical, you can damage your sinuses.
Wafting the smell to your face gives you a diluted sense of the chemical so the stronger smells are less likely to harm you.

don't sniff it directly. fan your hand over the opening of the container directing the fumes to your nose. be careful to not smell it for too long and only smell chemicals that are asked by your instructors to smell. take caution because most chemicals have irritating fumes, so always wear your lab goggles.
and yeah.
never. i mean never, never, never smell butyric acid.
just write: rancid butter.

keep the chemical out at a distance....cup your hand and lightly "fan" the odor towards you... then smell very lightly.

Not all chemicals are deadly, but be wise...if you have absolutely no idea what it is, you're taking a chance.

You should not smell one unless you know what it is and it is safe to do it.

Didn't they used to put canaries down the mines? That's what I'd do, I'd get next doors very yappy old dog to give it a whiff! (Not my own doggy's they're too sweet)
