Anyone have any good techniques to negotiate pay at a new job?? What would you say if they offered you an amount too low and you wanted more?

I guess that depends on how much too low. If we're talking about less than 5% of what you're looking for, I would ask if that amount offered was negotiable. If they're coming in like 20% lower than what you wanted, chances are the firm won't even be able to meet you halfway. Keep in mind, too, that there are other factors at work in compensation. The company may have tons of paid vacation time, a great 401(k) matching plan, ability to flex hours, and so on. In fact, if the employer says that they can't afford to pay you more, sometimes it's worth negotiating for additional vacation time.

Good luck!
