I can't give you a cut and dry answer. It's got everything to do with what surface I'm working on, and what texture I'm looking for...if any. I buy Prisma, Derwent, Stabilo (pastel pencils), Verithin, Faber-Castell Aquarell's, Design Spectracolour...and use em all at one stage of the inital comp rendering.
I work in Mixed Media most of the time, so Prisma, even though it's low wax, is still a no go for me. Paint doesn't like to stick to it. So I usually go with a watersoluable pencil for all Mixed Media work.
If I'm working in oils, that's different...game on.

I work with only Prisma brand pencils. I find that their low wax content makes them easy to blend. Beautiful, smooth colors everytime. But if you are still unsure, buy a few pencils in different brands open-stock and compare on your fav. paper. You should be able to see which work best for your type of artwork.
Hope this helps :)

I work with PrismaColors they are soft and good for blending. They also have harder pencils for people who do not like to work with the soft ones. Just don't drop them because the will crumble on the inside.

Another vote for prismacolors -- I think they are the gold standard. I have some Dewert watercolor pencils, but prismas rock.

prisma color is the best quality of colored pencils, but it really depends on what you like. crayola is too waxy to draw with, if that's what your planning on using it for, but laurention is fine.
