I found an old Fujitsu LifeBook (e300 series) in my basement and I want to try it out. I don't know how old it is, but it came with Windows 98 installed. I would like it to be a bit more current, but I know just about nothing about computers and I'm a bit confused.

I checked in Control Panel>System and it told me that it has 32-bit something-or-other. That meant nothing to me, so I looked again and it said "64 MB RAM". I right-clicked the C Drive to see how much space was on it, and it told me it had a 1.99 GB capacity, 22% percent of which was taken up by Win98.

So which is the one I should be paying attention to? And more importantly, will it run WinXP?

64 MB of RAM is no where near enough memory for Windows XP and my guess is the processor is going to be too slow too. The hard drive is just big enough, but you wouldn't be able to put much of anything else on it if you were even able to get it to install, which you won't be able to do.

You're best bet is to leave Windows 98 on this notebook.

If you want a notebook with Windows XP on it, do some shopping around and you should be able to find a decent one starting as low as $500 for a new one.

Windows XP will slow it down. There is an older computer we have, and the previous owners installed Windows XP when it originally had 98. XP took up too much of the RAM, so now it runs like crap. So perhaps your computer *could* run XP, but I wouldn't reccomend it.

(oops, didn't see your whole question, bad me)
No, that definately will not run XP. Get a newer computer. If you just want to play around and learn how to use it though, the laptop you already have would be perfect. There is nothing wrong with being a little behind the curve, I was running 98 till I got a new computer last year. Besides, Vista is coming out soon.

Dont u ever try installing Windows XP in it, it will crash the next moment u install windows xp. It is better u run it with Win 98. I am a computer techinician and in my experience I can say that Win 98 is the best OS Microsoft has ever released. absolutely Problem free.

Unfortunately you didn't say what processor its got...but that's OK you're not to blame.

If the processor is OK then yes it should run windows xp but will be pretty slow. In fact you're loptop actually meets the bare minimum specification and therefore Microsoft warns you that some features of windows xp may not work.

But to put a long answer short...YES

hello , you need a better hard drive 100gb will be good
you have to check the ram on the laptop to see is it for windows xp to run on that system
right click my computer icon click on properties if you need 512mbr , you can put in windows xp home service pack 2 on it , to install that just put in the windows xp home .cd in the drive and the windows xp home menu will pop up , just pick upgrade . not full install then windows xp home will take over windows 98

To install Windows XP 'Home' or 'Professional' onto your PC, it will need to meet the following specification:

PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;
(Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended)
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended
(64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 Gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space
Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

I regret to say, that your laptop is technically challenged. It would be fine to learn computing on and do simple things but the system is way too slow and the hard drive too small for XP. Try selling the old one on Craigslist.com and new ones are under $500.00

It might load, however, It will never run with only 64 ram, I tried this on a old IBM thank pad and WHAM no more computer, XP needs 128 ram and works better with 256 ram or highrer.

Don't waste your time on the old computer...
