He could have an upper respiratory infection, especially if you just brought him home from the pet store. It would be best to take him to the vet, but if that's out of your price range, try picking up an antibiotic called Ornacycline from the bird section of your pet store. It cost about $4 and if bacterial infection isn't actually the problem, it won't hurt him. Before you do that, however, check for wet tail. This is basically hamster diarrhea, but they die of it all the time, so it's pretty serious for hamsters. If he has wet poop on his tail/butt area, pick up a product called "dritail" from the pet store ASAP.

OMG OMG!!! Take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!
You might think that it is just those things from the "sandman" that we get, but it's not. It is a very dangerous illness to rodents. 2 of my teachers hamsters had it and she left them alone for just 5 days and then they both died!!! And they didn't die from old age or anything. So make an appointment TODAY!!!!

Did you change the bedding recently? I know my hamster starting losing all of his fur once I bought new bedding, he had a bad allergic reaction.

I'd say wipe down his eye, buy new bedding, and buy some vitamins for his water.

You could take him to the vet if it gets worse.

Wipe it off with a moist towelette, or paper towel, call your vet and ask if you could use mild saline solution (like for contact lens users) to rinse his eye, or like a visine solution, maybe he needs some medicated drops
