Much better control over the car. You can use the engine as a brake
- you can accelerate faster
You can control crawl speeds for parking etc better.
You have control over when to change gear.
and, as some others said, you use less fuel, and less wear and tear on your engine.

Besides all the stuff people are saying here(they are all true) the biggest and most important advantage is that the engine lasts longer because the engine doesnt have to use its own power to shift the trans which results in higher fuel economy. However if you drive it like you stole it all the time then forget all this crap..none of it helps you if you drive em hard.

About the only advantage of a stick is that you can push it to start it, The only advantage of an Automatic, is that you don't have to shift it at intersection or when your are in heavy freeway traffic.
