It might be easier to name TV shows that children COULD watch (like Sesame Street or The Muppets, child-specific shows like Bob the Builder and some National Geographic or Discovery Channel documentaries -- but watch out for animals slaughtering other animals. Yes, it's natural but it's also very upsetting to young children.).
"Bad" shows are anything with any sort of violence -- from police shows to cartoons; anything which promotes stereotyping or makes fun of people because of their color, gender, sexual preference(s), religious beliefs; almost all of these so-called "reality" shows; NEVER the news (way too violent and scary -- and real!) or music-TV.
The thing about young children is that they need to have their imaginations stimulated. A lot of television does their "thinking" for them. TV presents pre-determined images at a particular speed. With a book, someone else also may have created the images, but the child can move at his/her own pace, and even add to the story. Better yet are some fairy tales (like Grimm's, where the good person always succeeds) or Aesop's Fables, without pictures, so that the child can exercise her/his imagination.
There are various studies which suggest that exposure to TV violence desensitizes children, making them more prone to doing or accepting violent actions.
Children are like sponges; they soak up everything (especially when you least expect it!). But they don't have the experience or wisdom to recognize what is real and what is fiction.

I think tv can help children think that aggression and fighting are a means to an end and that it is ok to be mean and bully children. However the biggest influence over children are their parents and what values and principles they teach their kids. Peers also have a detrimental affect sometimes, but if parents have shown their kids how to be empathetic and compassionate towards others by making them think about walking in other people's shoes , then the media and peers ' influence will be lessened.

I think some of the movies out today with the gratuitous violence or sick humiliating humour should be monitored more closely by parents and parents should not rent or buy such movies where young teens and pre-teens can get ahold of them.

Wrestling and fight club type tv shows shouldn't be allowed either. Especially now since so many kids go online and watch other kids beating the crap out of other teens and homeless people.

And get rid of games like Grand Theft Auto, the Columbine Game etc that teach kids to kill cops and demean women and or kill their schoolmates. There is absolutely no reason those things need to be seen or bought for teenagers or anyone.

I don't think we can blame it all on the TV, bad things are what surround us anywhere you look, it is how we educate our kids to cope with all that that matters. No I am not saying that you have to let your children watch anything they want, there are restrictiions and as mentioned blocking some programms is not bad but it won't sheild them from the hard reality, look at the news, newspapers, it is full of it. I think the main concern is here the education of the children and of some parents that is lacking. We need to look at the programms with the children so that if there are reactions or questions we might help them to better understand. I know this sounds maybe rediculous but children do not always comprehend things they see or might interprete it other then meant. Besides on naming some shows that are not recomendable depends really on the age of the child or children. southpark is on my blacklist for the children. My view anyway, good luck.

Parents need to be aware that not all cartoons are intended for children (ie., Family Guy, South Park).

Personally, I have to watch out for some shows on the Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.

I cannot stand "Ed, Edd, and Eddy" and certain episodes of "The Fairly Oddparents", because of the crass humour (burping, vomit, and farting) and idea of making adults look like idiots.

Other then that, I think that the commercials do more harm with the constant bombarding of materialism and fast food. Most days, I either have to turn to PBS or just shut it off!

Most of the crime shows and shows that are all about sex. I was just watching a show that showed how to fake a drug test for example. Be very careful of what you let your kids watch. Block the bad stuff with a V chip.

Tv programs that shows violence and sexual matters is not good for children. What the children hear and see in tv, he will try to imitate it later in his peers or classmates.

Sometimes little kids doesnt know what is wrong and right yet so what they see and hear maybe are good for them. Better sorround your kids with educational toys and dvd's like Dora, Barney and etc.

All kinds of action cartoons/shows. Especially Dragonball Z/GT and all those stupid shows. I wouldn't let my kids watch those cartoons EVER!! Other than that the kind of shows that include strong language and adult scenes and violence as well as everything that has to do with crime and sex!

Crime shows, forensics shows; although it depends on the age of the child.

I would prefer my kid see a show about people enjoying sex rather than people enjoying killing/maiming someone.
