The sperm get trapped in the unfertile cervical mucus and die within hours. The semen is then washed out of the vagina by your natural secretions over the next few days.

the sperm goes to the same place, it just dies after a few days. if there's an egg there before it dies, fertilization can occur. if there's no egg there before the sperm dies, it just dies.
