It depends how far "back then". Diseases like scarlet fever, diphtheria, and typhoid are almost unknown now, but before 1940 I think by the age of 12 every child would have at least one friend, brother or sister, or cousin who had died from one of these. And others were permanently weakened by tuberculosis, or crippled by poliomyelitis - there was one victim of that in my primary school class in 1948 or so.

For one thing , Doctors made house calls . In the old days , children would often die from illnesses that today are easily cured with a shot of penicillan, such as sore throats, ear-aches , etc . And today , the MUMPS are unheard of due to vaccinations . But the problem today is , viruses are coming back stronger than ever because people don't finish their prescription in order to kill the virus . Also, illnesses are brought into countries by foreigners who carry disease and were never vaccinated And , SINFUL PARENTS are passing the AIDS virus onto the unborn fetus before birth .

Well, children are much less likely to die from diseases because of vaccinations. However the obesity epidemic in today's children is a negative effect on many children's health. This probably wasn't an issue "back then".

When I was young just about everyone had to suffer through measles, chicken pox and mumps. I knew one boy who had to wear braces on his legs because he had polio. Vaccines have eradicated a lot of these childhood diseases.
One major health concern today is that more children are obese. We used to spend hours going outside to play. Now kids seem to do less physical activity while they're still eating a lot of calories.

Back then being when?
The introduction of anibiotics and vaccines has meant the end of many childhood diseases. However, the most significant advances have been in prenatal care and care of newborns that have drastically improved the infant mortality rate.
