First of all, there is no such thing as a "Cheap car". When you purchase a cheap car, what you pay for it, may be just the down payment, The rest of it will appear as Repairs.
If you have good credit, Go for something that has some kind of a guarantee. Those "AS IS" cars are really a gamble.

Find one that perhaps needs some minor repairs, or isn't very pretty. They are usually cheaper. Then invest some time instead of money to get it fixed up. You will then probably be able to sell it for more than you paid for it, buy another and repeat until you find one you want to keep and drive.
