We have finally found a bathtub we like, but the description indicates it is inset. Does this mean that we have to have a large supportive wooden surface or worktop to mount it in that can support the weight of the bath or can it be supported by a frame underneath and then the wooden top (and side) surround can just be for show. Size is a key issue for us and we don't really have the space for a large surround to the bath.

Inset bath must be inset in a frame, however they are usually supported on feet as well. If you have to have the bath ask the salesman if a panel can be fitted, in which case you are OK.
We have an inset bath with a ledge running all around it, its great in that it will hold candles and gin and tonic. Another tip make sure the fitter puts the taps away from the wall, by doing so your back is againdt the wall and you can look into the room, instead of the traditional way of having the taps at the wall.

The both will be supported on a frame, it must not be supported on the roll top. Usually the tub will have feet and these are adjustable. I have just installed mine and the tub is flush to he floor. I was able to build in a separate floor underneath, therefore the bath sat on its feet which i adjusted so the roll top was just sitting 1 or 2 mil above the floor tiles. Leave this gap as when the bath is filled the weight will ultimately pull the bath down slightly, although no weight is on the roll / top of the bath. If the bath is not being sunk in a frame can be built around basically the same principle

'Inset' refers to the shape / style of the edge of the bath and the fact that it looks 'Inset'. However it will have to be supported on a frame which is adjustable.

Both bottom and sides need to be supported. Bottom sits on subfloor, and edge sits on top of finished tile. Grout, and caulk edge.
