If you have access to the Weather Channel, that's a good way to go. Also, there is truth to the saying, "Red sky at morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors delight." Watch the sunrise - if it's red, that means some wind in the distance is kicking up dust and you're probably in the path of an impending storm. Or, if you see a wall of thick clouds and it's windy outside, there's a pretty good chance you'll get a storm later that day as well. Online, you can also go to http://weather.com/ and get the forecast for your area. They will actually deliver that (or any other area's forecast) to your inbox if you opt for it.
Weather is pretty fascinating - there are more technical ways to know when a storm is coming, too, such as keeping a barometer and watching when it falls or rises. My dad used to fly planes and would tell us all about the different types of clouds and what barometric pressure meant - I wish I could remember everything he said about all that - I can't, but I still love trying to figure out what the sky is going to do next. Have fun learning!

It depends on how soon you want to know.
If it is a week or so ahead of time check the forecast, National Weather Service (NWS) or other source.
For a few days you can also look at the Storm Prediction Center's (SPC) Outlook. This will highlight areas with increased risk for 'bad' weather.
For a few hours, find a weather radio or local TV/radio station that broadcasts Watches and Warnings.

NOAA Weather Radio is the best thing to have. Also your local tv station will cut in on tv and tell you if something bad is happening. Don't watch The Weather Channel, they are horrible. You can sign up for weather alerts and forecasts in your email. Or just visit the National Weather Service Website at http://www.nws.noaa.gov and type in your zip code for the latest info. Complete with forecasts, radar, and more! Alerts will be at the top of the page.

OMG I LIVE NEAR YOU APPARENTLY. Northern Indiana FTW. Anyway... Ok, think: How many times have we had tornado watches and stuff and then NOTHING happens? Yeah, a lot. I take naps :) and sleep through the storm :) I also watch the weather. Mike Hoffman can be very reassuring sometimes Hahaha.

you can turn on your local newscast and they will talk about the weather. Weather.com is an excellent source for weather information.
What I do is log on to my local tv station and I signed up for weather alerts and any kind of weather alert will be brought up on my computer instantly.
