It depends on how sanitary you are. If you drink unfiltered water or eat something that has been exposed all day to flies and such, then you have a bigger chance of getting a tapeworm. But even if you do get a tapeworm, they are easy to get rid of. The doctor will give you a pill that should kill it. i wouldnt be too worried about it if i were you.

It incredibly would matter on what tapeworm you have yet a ordinary tapeworm drugs is praziquantel. Albenzadole and niclosamide are 2 others that are widely used. If for some reason you think of you have a tapeworm, pass to the docs!

Avoid organically grown foods. Wash vegetables completely, and cook foods (particularly pork and game) completely. Vote for pesticides, not bugs.
Talk to a travel physician before planning a trip to a foreign country, even a "first world" country. They are experts in disease avoidance when traveling.
If you do those things, your odds of getting a parasite go from very small (perhaps 1 in 500 in your lifetime) to insignificant (perhaps 1 in 10,000).

It's actually more common than most people realize. We don't always get our hands clean, we drink soda from unwashed cans, we eat fruits and vegetables without washing them, we walk barefoot outside, we have pets. I know several very clean people who have done cleanses to get rid of parasites and have. They felt better afterwards, not so tired and sluggish. You can get rid of them with a mixture of diatomacious earth in water. You drink about a tablespoon in a glass of water and it causes the parasites to die and come out. It's kind of sick sounding but we are human animals.

It's extremely rare. Most of the people who get worms live in third world countries where they don't have clean water supply.

It's possible (but unlikely) if you're handling animals (including dogs and outdoor cats). Otherwise the chance is extremely remote.

rather rare because we have good sanitation. Unless you are a complete slob, you probably don't have to worry about that.
