Learn to fly big planes that go VROOM, VROOM. Actually I do not know but I thought that was funny. I have heard that it is very expensive since you need tons of air time in various planes. Alot of pilots are ex military because they can get air time while working their job for Uncle Sam.

there are a number of major airline academies that will help you get your pilots license and additional ceritifcations. Gulfstream Academy, Delta Connection Training Academy and Mesa are a couple that come immediately to mind. Type "commercial airline training" into Yahoo to see what pops up. Good luck. The comment about them not hiring right now and AirForce pilots is reasonably true as well. Basically, if you don't have someone else (ie. the military) paying for your flight hours, that will be part of your educational expenses. There are programs that will accelerate some of the multi-engine certifications you'll need. Good luck.

You could try and get a pilot license for flying specific types of planes and a permit for transportation and then apply for the job to undergo more training - all of which would cost you a lot of time and money.
Or you could become an air force pilot and most likely would get the desired job without any problem right after quitting service...

you go to a flight school and work towards a certification. you would also want to get a college degree, since that is expected as well. honestly, most pilots are former airforce pilots, since they all look for numerous hours of prior piloting experience. Also, right now, I don't think any major airliners are looking for pilots. You'd be lucky to get a job for a local air tour company. Such is life.

How to Become an Airline Pilot
Checking flight instructionsYou've seen airline Captains walking around in their pressed shirts, fancy epaulets, and shiny wings, but have you ever wondered what it would take to get there?
Most pilots will tell you it's not for the money. In fact, only the Captains of the big jets make the big bucks. Instead, most pilots love their job just for the thrill of flying. Here are the steps toward getting the best cubicle in the world, the cockpit.
Steps
Get a class 1 medical certificate from an FAA medical examiner.
Look around your local area for a good flight school and instructor and begin working on your private pilot certificate.
Consider going to school to finish your degree if you haven't already. Virtually every flying job requires an associate degree and almost every airline requires a bachelors. Your degree doesn't have to be aviation related, however, any college degree will do.
Begin working on your instrument rating and commercial certificate.
Complete your certified flight instructor (CFI) rating and begin working at your flight club. Some flight clubs offer flight hours in exchange for instructing. This can be useful when you go on to your multi-engine rating.
Work on your multi-engine, certified flight instructor instrument (CFII), and multi-engine instructor (MEI) ratings.
Work on your airline transport pilot (ATP) rating and build up your flight hours.
A few regional airlines such as Great Lakes do not require an ATP rating and only require around 750 hours total and 50 hours of multi-engine time.
To work for a major airline, you will need to complete your ATP and a type rating for the aircraft you want to fly. Major airlines typically require at least 3,000 hours total flight time including at least 1,500 hours multi-engine, and around 800 hours as pilot in command (PIC) or second in command (SIC). These number are estimates and will vary depending on the airline.
Tips
Most airline promotions are based on seniority with the company rather than total flight time or experience.
