The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was inspired by serial killer Ed Gein. Ed Gein never used a chainsaw in any of his murders. Toby Hooper got the idea one day from being in a crowed hardware store and he happened to be in the chainsaw department. He was thinking of a way out and thats how he got the idea of using a chainsaw to kill people. The leatherface mask was inspired by a halloween party that Toby went to and their he saw a med student wearing what appeared to be another persons face thus giving birth to leatherface. If your have the collectors 2-disc dvd there is a section under which all of this is being described. I hope this helps.

It's not real. It didn't happen in El Paso.
It's VERY loosely based on the case of Ed Gein. Ed Gein killed no more than 2 or 3 people and all by shotgun. No chopping them up and making them into sausages. He did partial skin one female victim and claimed to enjoy wearing the torso out in the moonlight.
That's all. One guy. Not in Texas. No family.

It is not even "Based" on a true story, it is "Inspired by a true story." That means the author heard of this weirdo killer and then went on to write a bunch of fiction. The real guy was a killer, but mostly liked to dig up graves and mutilated bones and skin. And his killings were by guns.
Psycho and Silence of the Lambs are Inspired by the same guy, but they are completely different stories.
Saying it is true is like saying Jaws is true because there are Great White Sharks.

I think the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre is real, But not everything in the movie happened, they just take a geuss. I don't think the pre-quel is real though.

If you check out alot of websites it will tell you it's not real. These people have done hours and hours of research and there has never been any evidence that it was real.
Heres one of MANY sites explaining how it was just made up.
http://www.texaschainsawmassacre.net/Convinced.htm
And here is a website from the Texas prison system...saying it's false.
