I have to agree with some of the others:
Alan Kulwicki winning the championship, Harvick winning two weeks after Earnhardt's death, McMurray winning in his 3rd (I think) start.
But wasn't there a year or two in the 80s or 90s when the championship was won by just a few points and/or not by the points leader going into the final race?

"Gorilla" is right, nothing tops Kulwicki's run to the top. It would be like Robby Gordon winning the championship today.(owner/driver of a 1 car team)
Check the all time win list, anyone at the bottom with only 1 career win, was probably an upset of sorts. Lake Speed maybe?

Alan Kulwicki being the champ in 1992 has to top them all. Other than that, there are too many to call. Richard Petty in the 1979 Daytona 500 is up there also.

Lets see.
1. Dale Earnhardt Sr. wrecking at the Dayonta 500 and losing his life which I still think that Sterling Marlin did that, I'm not blaming him for the death but I'm saying I blame him for the wreck.
2. The Hendrick Organization, losing those 11 people during the plane crash right outside of Martinsville, and at the same time Jeff Gordon completing a rare Martinsville Sweep, and Rick Hendrick losing his brother, son, and 2 neices, on that plane crash, along with Jeff Gordon and all the other Hendrick drivers who were especially close to the people who were on that plane, and Rick Hendrick had lukemia at one point in his life but as of now I believe he is in remission.
3. Jimmie Johson not winning the championship like 3 years in a row and finishing second all three years and in 2004 only being 8 points behind Kurt Busch in winning the championship and Jeff Gordon only 16 points behind him.
4. Matt Kenseth wrecking Jeff Gordon at Bristol in 2006, and then at Chicago Jeff Gordon spinning Kenseth out, then Kenseth being the idiot he is and coming over to Jeff Gordon knowing he would be mad and looked what happened Jeff Gordon pushed him and he got fined $10,000 what a rip off, he was mad and Kenseth should of known better for coming up to a driver after spinning him out during the race, and he had to of known something would happen. Then for both cases did nothing about which Kenseth did it on purpose and some say Gordon did it as payback I don't think he did I think it was an accident.
5. Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. not making the 2005 chase, during Gordon's 13th year of racing, his first year except his rookie year not making the chase, and then for Jr. one of the biggest names in NASCAR besides Jeff Gordon, not making the chase.
