Most people who insult others using slurs and other ugly words do it merely for effect. They feel empowered by indignant reactions.
I've learned not to feel helpless in my silence. Acknowlege their rudeness by looking them square in the eye and move on. Feel lucky that you do not have to draw your self-worth from the suffering of others.

Look at them in a very puzzled way and say, I must have misjudged you. Then walk away.
What you are saying is that up until that moment you did not realize how ignorant and simple minded they were and choose not to have a person of that sort in your presence or field of vision.
When you run into them again, look around and through them, not away. Look in their direction but do not make eye contact with them, as though they do not exist. This is the biggest put down ever.
If you like them on some level and they ask what is the problem explain that you had given them credit for being a much more worthwhile person and do not choose to be in the presence of negative narrow thinking. If they are clueless, and really do not understand, explain if you think it is worth your time.
Some people are just plain ignorant and when presented with the voice of reason, may respond and understand.
I am impressed with your civilized and thoughtful way of handling such uncivilized behavior and hope my comments are of some help.

Exaggerate your response fake a heart attack move towards them.
Then look them in the eye show know emotion just say don't ever speak to me like that again. The response could be what are you going to do about it?
Just say what are you going to do stop me! hold the stare turn and walk away. Don't respond to any haggling
You could just report the incident but you will get others telling you that

It depends on why they are making the comment. If they are making it to goad you into violence remember they are probably cowards and have got a trick up their sleeves or friends to support them. In that case ignore it completely, they want you to react. If they are passing comment out of ignorance, simply tell them that they are wrong and if they wish to be enlightened you'd be happy to discuss it with them. On the whole it's probably best just to ignore them, the chances are they are sad creatures with few true friends and even fewer brain cells.

I play as if I fit the stereotype.
There's something just juicily ironic about doing so.
